RTS Drag-tile-system
Hey!
I've been working for a while with my Banished like RTS game and I have managed to create a feasible building system. It utilizes a semi-like grid system that allows for structure snapping without actually manually placing grid objects throughout the entire map. However, the question I'm trying to ask here is how should i approach a drag-tile build system, for example: roads, farms or mabye even walls?
The idea behind the system is to enable the user to firstly place the primary connection-object then enable them to drag the mouse over which direction you intend to build towards and create a green like layer in which the type of land should be placed.
My idea is to build this with the use of simple tiles that are connected seamlessly in the fashion you intend to form the land. However, due to either camera render range or potential performance issues i doubt this is the proper way to approach the system. What would you do?
