Question by FruitSnackTiger · Dec 05, 2019 at 09:57 AM · c#tilemapdistancetilenearest

Finding the location of the tile in a tilemap nearest to the player

Goal

I have a tilemap that contains all the water tiles for the ocean in a beach scene, and I want to be able to calculate the distance between the player and the nearest water tile (mainly so that I can fade in ocean wave audio depending on distance, and also show messages based on the player's distance from the ocean).

My Idea

I've been trying to get an array of each tile's transform in the entire tilemap (or potentially only tiles within a certain radius of the player to minimize computation) and iterate through the list to find the closest one. If this script is attached to the ocean-water tilemap, it might look something sort of like this:

 public class GetDistanceToNearestTile {
   Transform tiles[];

   private void Start() {
     tiles = GetComponent<TileMap>().GetAllTileTransforms();
   }

    private void Update() {
      float distance = FindMinDistance();
      if (distance < 20) {
        PlayOceanSounds(distance);
      }
    }

   private float FindMinDistance() {
     float minDist = Vector2.Distance(tiles[0].position, PlayerController.instance.transform.position);
     foreach (Transform tile in tiles) {
       float distance = Vector2.Distance(tile.position, PlayerController.instance.transform.position);
       if (distance < minDist) {
         minDist = distance;
       }
     }
     return minDist;
   }
 }

Really, what I'm asking about is the cleanest way to implement the "Transform tiles[] = tilemap.GetAllTileTransforms()" functionality. It seems like it should be relatively straightforward but can't seem to find anything in the docs or forums.
If you have a better solution, feel free to mention it! This is just the only solution I came up with.
