Can't drag text from hierarchy with TextMeshPro

I just started using TextMeshPro but can't drag the text from the hierarchy into its place on the inspector. When I looked online, people said to have both

using TMPro;

public TextMeshProUGUI cashDisplay;

I have both in my script, but just can't drag the text object from the hierarchy. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
