Question by AnatolyDream · Mar 23, 2016 at 11:15 PM · terrainperformance

One large terrain or multiple smaller ones?

Hi!

I'm working on a yard for my game and I'm not sure what size it's going to be later (or how many yards there is going to be with time). So, my question is should I create one large terrain and build the yard somewhere in the center or should I create a smaller terrain and add another terrain later if I'm going to add more space\yards in my game?

P.S.: I'm not sure if leaving a huge empty part of terrain beyond the yard is going to affect game's performance somehow.

Thank you!

Hi, If you Google your questions you will see there are various answers ou there - but they are contradictory.

I would recommend going with a single terrain of reasonable size - e.g. 1000x1000 - if you use the 1 unit. The 1 meter scale that should give you place for plenty of yards.

Also, baking light and shadows will help performance dramatically.

Mainly, depending on how you intend to navigate in your game it may be worthwhile to consider treating each yard as a separate scene. Then each scene would have a small terrain.

Finally, helpful tutorial on terrain settings here :http://wiki.unity3d.com/index.php?title=Terrain_tutorial#Step_1:_Resolution_settings

Sorry I can't be of more help,

Hi! Thanks for your suggestion! I plan on making a territory with two or three small villages, each in different location. I want to make it more like open world ins$$anonymous$$d of putting each village in a separate scene. Navigating would be driving a vehicle and running on foot. I'm not sure yet if there is going to be two or more\less villages, so that's why I want to know if I should either add more terrain in the future to expand the territory or create a large one and have some spare space.
