What causes this terrain behavior?
Ediiting pixels vertically makes a line, but horizontally makes a peak the edited terrain pixels are adjacent. The height map resolution is 513.
What I can imagine that the terrain is tesselated in a line horizontally, but it is a more complex pattern vertically. Have you tried turning on wireframe shading in the Scene view (see screenshot to see where exactly)? $$anonymous$$aybe that will give you more info on what happens.
