How to efficiently reduce size of spritesheets in 2d games.
Hello there, we are making a traditional graphic adventure. The main character has around 20 sets of animations, of between 12 / 72 fps and 3 other characters that have 3 or 4 different animations .
The size of the individual sprites has to be 512*1024 so it doesn't look blurry in game. In order to make this we need to use 8K spritesheets, and guess what, the game size ended up reaching 1.8GB which is crazy for a demo with 8 different static rooms with a 2k sprite for the background.
I can reduce the size by crunch compressing the spritesheets, but I feel this is something that needs to be addresed BEFORE entering unity, in the art production stage.
Is there something we are missing?. Because again, dealing with 1.8GB for a 30 minutes demo and graphics like "Darkestville Castle" (when that one is 1.5Gb being a FULL game) seems crazy, although around my place nobody seems to be very concerned about it...
Thanks in advance.
