Can scripts be attached to speedtrees?

I want to be able to chop down my trees!

However I can't get my script to work on trees I place in my tree instances, IE trees added to the terrain object with Terrain.AddTreeInstance().

Is there anyway to do this? Or can scripts only be attached to game objects, so I'd have to manually place all my trees on to my map?
