My hierarchy panel suddenly became blank but the rest of my scene is still visible. Is there a fix?
I was just working on the scene and then suddenly noticed that the hierarchy panel was blank.
My scene was still visible and I could select objects and see their properties in the inspector Panel.
I can still search for objects in my hierarchy panel and they will appear greyed out. Also the parenting of objects is no longer visible.
If I click on the arrows they will sometimes open up and show the objects inside them but most of them just open and show nothing.
Other than that the rest of the project is functioning normally.
Has anyone ever ran into a similar issue?

I had this problem and it turned out that all the names had been removed. I clicked on where the objects would show if they were visible in the hierarchy and then I wrote a name for the objects in the inspector. I hope this helps.

I am exactly on the same page. Have been Googling for a while and it seems this error can come from very different sources...In my case, I was trying to open a Unity 2017 project in a Unity 5.4.3 machine. I thought I wouldn't have such big errors in such a small project.
