How would you convert 3D terrain into a 2D tilemap?
I would like to take a chunk of terrain and have it represented by a 2D map that the player could open. The tilemap system seems ideal for this, but I am unsure how to proceed. Is there a way to take the height map of 3d terrain and somehow convert it into a 2D tilemap? Any ideas on how to approach this problem would be appreciated.

You could take the vertices of a mesh to get y position of every vert, and then store it in some texture :D by setting color value of red or green or blue channel. if you take a try, you can send your code here and i can try to help you.
