How can i have my character be hidden behind tilemap walls?
I want my character and objects to be hidden behind tilemap walls, but any attempt so far at this has resulted in my character being hidden by the walls above instead, do I need to change the characters sorting layer dynamically through scripts?

Your second screenshot is actually how I would do things. Have different tilemaps for different sorting layers; such as foreground and background walls, floor layer, objects layer, etc.
