Character Customization - Do I have it right?

Hi Guys! I'm a modeler, not a programmer, and I'm trying to figure out what I need to model for a customizable character. From what I gather on the internet, I need to model the different variations of my model as different objects (i.e. several types of shirts, different hair styles). I will also need different textures for each of these models. Then the programmer can create a script to turn off the objects the user doesn't want and save that configuration.

My Question:

Is that right? Is that how you do it?

Will I do the guns the same way? (its an MMO so there are hundreds of guns)

Saying thank you in advance! "THANKS"

Yes you would want to model the base character first then model several different other attributes like hair and guns and shirts. But make different animations for each combination. But you can have something like A person with one machine gun and a person with another machine gun have the same animation if that makes any sense. But just saying, are you sure this is a Unity Question?

I'd say, ask your programmer. It's up to them how this should work, so it's their call not yours.
