Why can't I import some standard assets?

I am running Unity 2017.1.0f3, and imported the Third Person Controller from the standard assets. Trying to build, I got an error that the CrossPlatformController prefabs were missing, so I went back and tried to import them, but the UI would not let me select them for import (they were unchecked, and didn't become checked when I clicked on them).

Any solution to this?

I'm having the same issue. Can't add prototyping assets. The box that imports them won't change when I click it.
