Question by Icedwhisper · May 02, 2017 at 01:37 PM · publishingdevelopmentselling

Can I edit and sell Unity tutorial game as my own?

So for example, if I download the Survival Shooter Tutorial and edit it, will I be able to sell it on Steam or iOS? How much changing is required, if any, before I can sell it? Or do I have to start from scratch with something similar? Thanks!

Ask yourself this: would you pay money for a game on S$$anonymous$$m that someone else had copied from a tutorial? Of course asset flips are legal, but prepare to have your developer reputation annihilated as a result, before it's ever really began...

$$anonymous$$aking games is hard, requires effort and talent. Unity makes it significantly easier from a software point of view, but you will not make any money until you add something of value yourself.

oh boy, if you didn't notice s$$anonymous$$m releices thousands of games per year and thousands of entries never make it past green light. development is competitive. for the indie game devolopers making it on s$$anonymous$$m, they are making it on originality to stand out out from the thousands I can assure you that if you are still looking at you tube tutorials, you knowledge and talent is not yet ready to compete with those who are inventing original ga$$anonymous$$g concepts for income of any type.

You realize that this is a place for people to help others with doing actual work, right? And you're asking us how little you have to do to capitalize on our good will for your own benefit?

What you're describing is known as an 'asset flip' and gamers hate it because it's lazy and boring. Programmers hate it because it is theft that undermines the integrity of the whole industry.

So, here's the takeaway:

Can you do it? Hire a lawyer and ask them. Any time you pass other peoples' work as your own you need to be prepared to get sued ahead of time.

Should you do it? Only if you want to be known as lazy scum.

That being said, the tutorials are good starting points for a beginner. But a beginner should not be publishing anything for profit. Use it to learn how to program, then make something yourself, and profit on your own work.

@Icedwhisper Well i would say its OK if you followed a YouTube or dare i say udemy tutorial and made your own sprites/3D models. wrote the scripts that they showed you, but once the tutorial is done, you go off and use what you have learnt to expand on the game. But as you are downloading a game and slightly changing it (which isn't really a tutorial but still). I would suggest you download the game, look at the scripts see how things are done and then go out and make your own game. And sure you can use the other games code as reference, but at least write all the code yourself!

What do you think @FortisVenaliter
