Question by Daniil12 · Jun 08, 2013 at 11:27 AM · projectlegalrpg-gameburgzergarcade

Is it legal to use tutorials?

Hello everyone!

If you use scripts and tutorials BurgZerg Arcade(Hack and Slash RPG Game Tutorials) while developing the game, and do everything he does in the tutorial, and then decided to develop your own game, built on his scripts, it will be legal or not?

Check with the authors of the code you're thinking of using. Generally, they wouldn't have issues with people using the code/assets/etc., but unless you see some permissive license, you are not likely to have any legal use unless they provide it and it's better find out before you make the effort.

Well that depends, if the Creator of the scripts said that the scripts are free to use then yes.

Try asking the creator him or herself and find out that way.

In my opinion if it is tutorial based scripts and you use them to develop your own game, then yes that is fine as long as it is scripts and not his models, rigs, etcetera... My thoughts will be use them and then give the creator(s) credit in the final-product unless they tell you not to then it is perfectly legal.

Was this helpful? Give me a thumbs up if so :)

Thanks!

Then I'll write the code myself. And what can you say about the Assets from Unity Assets Store? Is it legal to use in my own game?

100% Legal, as long as you do not illegal download the ones you have to pay for. That is what the assets store is for :)

Concerning the asset store you need to read the EULA of what you download. They might require special treatment when you use their assets, like mentioning their name or not modifying or simply do what you want with it. Still, the chances they find you use their assets and did not respect their EULA are small but is not a reason for doing wrong.
