Real time reflection probes feasible on mobile devices?
I've tried using time sliced real-time reflection probes, but the performance hit on android has been severe. Even with the lowest resolution cubemap settings (16) and aggressive layer culling, rendering to cubemap in real time takes up to 200 ms per frame on my test device (which is a Zenfone 2). Time slicing somewhat helps while capturing the different faces, reducing the rendering time to about 5 ms in those frames, but the final creation of the cubemap still creates huge spikes.
Is this method simply not viable for mobile devices, or am I missing something? How do mobile games achieve real time reflections on objects without becoming unplayable?
