Unity 5, black screen and unable to escape the play mode.

When i tried to play test the game in editor it freezes up however i am still able to move completely fine. the surrounding panels of the workstation are covered by the black areas as seen in the picture below. Also, whenever i try to leave the game mode using the escape key it doesn't leave. I have looked in the FPS controller class that i was using from the default package and did notice nothing for escaping the game but my knowledge of c# is limited as i am still learning. Help is need as this is very annoying.
