Texturing procedural generated meshes
Hey guys, I'm an intermediate programmer and a Unity beginner. I solely programed 2D applications and only have basic knowledge in 3D applications. I followed some tutorials and built a procedural island generator which works perfectly fine. I get nice meshes and nice coloring with vertex colors. Now i want to add some textures to it, but i don't know which way is the best to go. In the tutorials I could find on the internet, shaders are used. For testing purposes, I created my own and got it to work. Besides looking very cool and having some very nice texture blends, the downside is that it only maps textures to y coordinates. For my application it would be neccessary to make it dependent on some other variables, too. As far as i have researched it, this is not achievable via a (single) shader. So my question is, what is the way to go? Using Shader(s) or UV texturing with a texture atlas? Or something else? Suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thank you very much :)
