Question by huangjin · Oct 07, 2012 at 03:48 PM · servermmolanguage

C#, SmartFox, which 3D MMORPG authoritative server?

my team want to develop a 3D MMORPG browse game,I am responsible for service end part.

I read a part of unity manual, it is very simple to create enhanced functionality, like complex terrain, the terrain and obstacles of collision detection, pathfinding and so on.

It is very suitable for the client, but I don't know which tool is suitable for the authoritative server of multiplayers. please help me!

  1. Unity provide networking features by NetworkView component, so Unity is able to do authoritative server, It looks like a good choise. But I worry about it scalability, unity shoule only support single thread, can it handle thousands of characters's action?

  2. C# is one of the unity script language, it can use the powful functionality provided by unity directly. So I guess I can use C# like this way. When I recieved the client command, I get the GameObject's component by get the GameObject itself, then invoke the function of component to complete the command. But I worry about the build in unity functionality can be used in multiple threads environment? and need I write network part by myself?

  3. SmartFoxServer is very flexible, but it looks like only support java code extension. If I choose this, need I get the designed data of unity, write the collision detection or pathfinding same with client again? It looks so bad!

just FYI Unity3D is not a server and cannot in any way be used as a server or anything to do with a server.

you're right that you'd need "something else" for a server, some LA$$anonymous$$P system
