Connecting SQL with Unity

Is there any possibilitiy to connect Unity with SQL?

I have never created a multiplayer game using unity. I read a lot of tutorials about networking but i think it will not work well without database. The point is that i want to create MMO game so it's needed to have database with quests, logins, passwords, last player possition and others, but PHP way of this isn't slowly? Maybe you have a better options for this kind of game. I'll be glad for any suggestions to create other server engine isteed of SQL way.
