Why is the canvas backwards in scene view
I created a button in the new UI, trying to follow the manual. In scene view, the canvas rectangle is visible but not aligned with my view, even though the Screen Space Overlay mode is still selected. I see the Button, but the text reads backwards! I'm seeing it from the back, and moving around in the scene doesn't help. The button appears normally in the Game view. Using 4.6.1f1 on a MacAir with Mavericks.

That's normal. Either Screen Space Overlay or Camera both build the canvas at the edge of the Scene.
The correct way to view the canvas in the Scene view is to hit the 2D button just below the Scene tab.
You can zoom out and spin round to view it from the right angle in 3D and you will end up looking through the Canvas to your Scene but pressing the 2D button is a lot easier.
(-> $$anonymous$$mmpies) Thank you, that was helpful, now that I understand that moving through the scene actually does work, I just didn't go far enough. But pressing the 2D button didn't seem to improve the situation for me. It just changed the view to some other direction that did not show the canvas, just lots of sky. Probably because I'm not familiar with 2D editing.
Odd, that 2D button is nothing to do with Unity 2D v Unity 3D it's just there to show the new UI canvas direct on.
Does your Canvas or camera have any unusual settings.
I only have Indie Unity so to display 3D objects in my menu I have a camera pointing downwards below the terrain that I use as my menu. It plays all kinds of crazy with the 2D button as it can't work out where to go to but other menus that just use the Canvas default camera are fine with the 2D button.
After some playing around, this is what I concluded: The 2D viewpoint is on the ground at the edge of the scene (where the canvas is). If I (1) move out and turn to see the canvas in 3D; (2) then move the button to ground level; (3) then press 2D, I find myself looking close-up at the "tt" in the middle of "Button" (the default label on a newly created button). That must be the default location of the 2D editing viewpoint.
Oh, now I see that I can back off further from the canvas/button with the mouse scroll control, and navigate in the plane with arrow keys. So that IS a good way to get quickly to a good view of the canvas.
Use "F" select once in 2D on the Canvas to avoid all that stuff.
