Your question is very confusing, but i guess you talk about a Unity update? Just click Help -> Check for Updates
or just load the newest version from http://unity3d.com/unity/download/
The best way to update is to download the newest version and re install Unity? Is there no way to just install the update and apply it to the currently installed version of Unity?
No, Unity doesn't have an "update installer". Each versin of Unity is quite "unique". when you install the newer version to the same directory, the old one will be replaced. If you install it to another directory you can actually have 2 or more different versions installed at the same time.
Of course. Your projects shouldn't be inside the Unity installation folder.
If I am downloading a new version of Unity, do I still need to download the web player and other stuff or do I only need to download the application or something.
The Unity setup allows you to select which components you want to install.
Which components do I need to install to update?

All of your projects should still be usable if not upgrading from too far back. For example some script references may be obsolete you would need to convert them to current usage.
