                sprite2d gameperformancespriterendererdraw calls

How come setting sprite tint/alpha does not increase draw calls?
I was always told that when ever I change something about a material, in run time, especially a tint color or alpha value, that Unity would clone that material an increase my draw calls.
But that does not appear to be the case for sprites? I have several 10's to 100's of sprites on a scene -- all using the same sprite atlas and using the "Sprite-Default" material.
Then during run time, I might change a single sprite tint color or set the alpha of another to fade out -- but none of this ever seems to increase the draw calls.
I'm not complaining. But I would like to understand.
What's going on here? Manny
