Using stencil buffer as form of zwrite?

Shouldn't it be possible to use the stencil buffer as a form of zwrite where the highest alpha value recorded for a pixel is the drawn alpha, so that sprites with gradients dont cut out higher alpha of another sprite, only the highest alpha is drawn?
