Checker Board Grid

So I'm pretty new to unity and i need help making a checker board script. I have the board and everything set up, i just cant figure out for the life of me how to write the script to move the pieces. The player should click a piece, then click where they want to move it. The catch is that it needs to be math based, so i need it to be like a grid that you would find in Algebra with X and Y coordinates. The player would then type in coordinates for the piece to move. Examples would be: Moving to (1,-3) would move the piece to 1 place left from the center on the X axis, and 3 down from the Y axis.

Its a bit confusing, I know. And I understand that it might not be the easiest to script. Any help is appreciated greatly!

Perhaps you could edit your post and clarify a couple of points, specifically: a) Do you want the interface to be point-and-click, or based on entering numerical deltas? (You mentioned both, so I'm not sure which you want.) And, b) Can you move by (1, -3) in checkers? I haven't played much checkers, but I don't remember the rules including that type of move.
