shader or decal

im trying to get a damage marker on objects where a decal can wrap around an object, my goal is to have it so when i cut int oan object it can split it and have a cut wound like this, thoug him fairly new to mesh generation and shaders, i do own shader forge as its supose to be alot easier than the unity default shader system. however im unsure of the way i can go about doing this, any ideas for me to try would be helpful. i know decals are flat as a plane so i know this will only work for flat surfaces. however i want this to work for any mesh. i would liek to start with a cube then move towards round objects etc.

ideas i have thought about doing wiht it are

Shader or some way to add dynamic paint to a mesh/material at run time, what i was thinking about is how splatoon does their painting system?
