Did my software download incorrectly?
Hello all, Mooregrimm here,
I´m having beginner problems. I downloaded Unity 2018.3.5f1 (64-bit) and upon opening, it prompted me to download Unity 2018.3.6f1 (64-bit). However, while installing, it issued a promt saying that the install was stopped or failed because it couldn´t remove some of the previous files. I made sure everything was closed and clicked retry two times, but it was not succesful. so pushed run and it restarted the install. Afterwards everything seemed fine, except the old shortcut was still on my desktop, so I figurd at worst I´d have some redundant files to get rid of. Afterward, I started the Program,(2018.3.6f1) and ran the basic tutorials. Everything went fine until I got to Basic Tutorial - 03, step 5/14. After promting me to change the enimies speed value to 1, I did so, several times. By entering it manually as well as using the slide. I pressed enter aftarwards also. However, it doesn´t seem to register and make the "Next" button clickable. I´ve even tried exiting the tutorial, of course without saving, and restarting….same thing.
Any solutions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks all,
-Mooregrimm
reinstall 20183.3f1 as the other is still in a unstable experimental state. ignore the update warning and use 2018. 3.3f1 as it is the most recent stable version.
Update:
Found the issue on another post
Notes
Didn't think of this but it makes so much sense. The name of the folder it is referencing is named wrong when installing into the older versions folder, rena$$anonymous$$g it fix's the issue, although that would completely explain why I've never seen this error between unity 4.2 and 2018 - 3.3f1 i Always make a new folder, where most people just let it install wherever, i never do this for any program, always custom install, and there is a reason for this.
The Reason:
Reason is that the more data on you the slave drive read through, constantly has to read through it nlike a library of books, the slower you're PC becomes, by never bogging down your C drive and allocation everything to their own folders, helps with you OS massively.

And if the file downloaded would have some transfer errors, it would not install. There are checksums in installers for situations like that.

Thanks for the comments. So, i went to the Unity Download Archives and downloaded the 2018.3.3f1. Everything seemed to install fine, It said it was removing the old files as well. Afterwards, the old shortcuts were still on my desktop...so, again I figured I had some redundant files to get rid of. But, I started the 2018.3.3f1 anyways. I went straight to the Basic Tutorial - 03...same thing. Still not sure if it was just user error I exited and went to the Basic Tutorial - 04. Everything went fine until step 13/17. When asked to input the Transform values for the Pushable Box, the X value registers immediately. But, the Y value doesn't register. It's kind of a bummer, but I guess its not all bad, as long as the rest of the software works fine. But I would like to find a solution….I'm not sure if going through and making sure the other versions are deleted manually would help. -Thanks
ok mac or windows? almost sounds like a $$anonymous$$ac error
perfect, ok were going to try something, may take a while depending on your net speed as it's a new pc. When installing unity this time try this:
This never fails me.. 7 Unity versions installed and counting
Double click the .exe you just downloaded (stable) click yes to install,
Click next,
Accept terms, click next,
Tick *checkmark*off: Unity very top and windows build second from bottom for sure, And what you need for your game[edit] sounds like mobile, so android i would assume not iOS but maybe you would like to do both and make 2 version 1 for each platform so get both of those too now. if all else fails do a Full install.. but i never do myself too much wasted space.
next is folder location so when prompt, Don't let unity choose where to install, custom pick yourself by clicking browse,
Click the drive you want to install into or file and click "$$anonymous$$ake new folder" to make a new folder inside the highlighted location wait do you have a second hard drive? inside it must have it's own folder with it's own name separate from the first install, so make a second folder now,
if second drive where i place $$anonymous$$e Place inside "D:\\Unity\Unity 2018 3.3f1"
else place in "C:\Program Files (x86)\Unity\Unity 2018 3.3f1"
remove all unity icons off desktop for now,
run the install with Unity CLOSED
now that it is done installing.. to be safe and yes, redundant on purpose and may sound silly but, delete the new short cut. Right click on the desktop and navigate to new, move over and second from the Top, is Create Shortcut. A window open's and asks for an address, you can manually type it in or click browse. Just click browse lol. Navigate in the pop-up window to your new saved folders and find the Editor Folder and open it. in here and 3 from the button of the list is your .exe. Click it and click next, Last thing here is name it hit finish.
Last thing to do is run and test so click your new shortcut
This never failed me before but i don't usually go through this many steps either, i never need to! But were covering everything and customizing it all along the way. I truly hope this helps you or anyone else that has had this issue.
If this doesn't help I'm very sorry i couldn't be of much help, and i hope you get this solved very soon. Unity is a great tool and the community is very active and supportive. Good Luck!
Well it made it a lot farther.. but results more or less the same... I$$anonymous$$O not a complete install so yeah, i'll wait for your reply.
Well, I'm going to look through and delete any other files of the previously downloaded versions...and maybe uninstall everything and then reinstall the 2018.3.3f1. For now I've downloaded the Tutorial Project for the 2D platformer, and I'll see how that works.
double check to see what unity version that pack is made for this unity has had a vary big upgrade FYI so just thought i should point that out. End of 2018 was big for Unity Development!
