Max 2009 and Maya 2009

I have several 3D models created from 3dsMax 2009 and several from Maya 2009. I've imported them into Unity via the Assets folder as their native file formats (.3ds, .max, .mb, .ma). However, I cannot drag and drop them into my scene.

The only solution has been to save them as .fbx files with textures embedded...but this is not ideal when you are trying to make changes/updates to your 2009 Maya/Max files. In order for me to see an update, I have to delete my previous .fbx prefab and drag the new .fbx prefab into the scene. Then I have to re-link all of the textures and re-set all of the colliders, breaking my prefab.

Is this because I'm using 2009? It has never been a problem in the past. I am using the free version of Unity Indie. Any advise is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Shawn

No, it should have nothing to do with 2009. What do you mean by "you can't drag and drop them into scene"? Are they imported? Do you get any import errors? Can you see them in preview?

Using FBX shouldn't be different as using max/mb file. I don't really understand why you have to drag new fbx prefab into the scene. As long as you overwrite old fbx file with new, it should reimport just as max/mb files do.
