Sprite Animation not swapping with Game Object replacement

I am creating a 2D RPG, and trying to swap out Children of a Game Object that are animated in the animator (I am using the same bones in different positions), in order to swap out different body parts on my character. The character is able to swap out legs, arms, head and torso individually, but when I swap any game object out for another in the Game preview, it will not animate, they remain static at their base position.
However, if I press Play in the inspector while the Game is running, the animation will begin and the bones will work correctly. The same thing happens if I simply replace the Children of the base Game Object in the inspector, it plays fine. Only when I run the game and attempt to swap out Game Objects in real-time does it fail.
