How to Partially Blur an Object
Hi there. I'm making a rhythm game where notes scroll toward the camera, very similarly to how they do in Guitar Hero. However, I don't want my objects to simply blink into existence once they cross the camera's far clipping plane. I'd like them to slowly blur into view, like this screenshot from Guitar Hero III:
Note how the far edge of the note board is transparent, but the rest of it is opaque. The same applies to the notes as they come into view. That's the effect I'm trying to accomplish.
How can i do this? One idea i had is using a material/particle system placed at the edge of the note board that somehow makes anything it overlaps invisible based on it's alpha at that pixel? I don't know if such a thing is possible.
