Question by tykimos · Sep 05, 2013 at 11:31 AM · cameratransform

Unit of panorama skybox

I set panorama image into skybox and I place object onto panorama image.

I found that the scale is 1m in real world is 10 unit in Unity3D at the skybox.

At first I think the 10 value would depend on panorama image (or camera focal length). So I checked other images.

However, the scale value is surprisingly same.

I think all scale is same as 10 in any panorama image.

I want to know the background this for having conviction.

There is no "scale" for a panoramic image. Try scaling your whole scene around the camera position and you will see that the image the camera sees does not change at all.

For example, the position of the real object is (1m, 1m, 1m). I have to place this object at the panorama image. So I need the scale and offset between real world and panorama image. The camera position is (0m, 1m, 0m). In unity, I set camera 0, 10, 0 and object 10, 10, 10. So, the object is surpriasly set at exact object image at panorama image. In addition I checked with other panorama image. In conclution, I think the scale is 10 when I know exact object and camera position at the real world.

The left image is real object image and I set sphere object at the right image.

Try it - you will get the same result if scaling your scene down, e.g. placing the camera at (0,1,0) and the object at (1,1,1) (if you also scale down your object to 1/10th of its size).

I checked. You're right. Thanks to your comments, I can handle object position easily! No sacle is needed. You means that there is no change in any scale if camera and object position are set as same scale. In other word, the relative position of them is important in panorama image because skybox is placed at infinite space.
