Question by rd42 · Jul 01, 2010 at 03:13 PM · buildsavedefault

Default Save directory

When I open an existing project and then go to build it, I now get prompted to save the file but it doesn't go to the folder for the project I opened it from, it defaults to the desktop.

I didn't use to have to pick a save location.

Any ideas?

The application dictates the default location that is shown in a Save File Dialog, so if Unity isn't showing you your Assets folder, it's Unity's fault, and there's nothing you can really do about it. It may have saved your last location, so for example, if you save a Scene to the Desktop and then close the Save File Dialog, when you re-open it, it will display the Desktop folder again. There's nothing you can do to change this as far as I know, it's just how dialog boxes are handled within the application.

If you've lost your project folder somehow (shame on you, organization is important :P), close Unity, hold down the ALT key, and start Unity again. Browse the list of recently opened project folders that appears, to get the path to your project.

Sorry to resurrect an old question, but I've found the answer, it's a simple registry entry that needs to be changed. See here: http://www.dociletree.co.za/adventures-in-unity-how-to-change-the-default-new-unity-project-path-in-windows/ for more information.
