3d grid/tile based map
Hi there firstly i would like to thank-you for taking the time to read this , and secondly i would like to apologize for tagging this thread wrong if i have. Awhile ago i think i posted a question and forgot entirely about it, however i have carried on trying to learn what i can in unityscript and gathering assets and information.
Once remaining issue and i'm sure this is down to having never actually taken games design in college but instead learning it in pieces at home is that the type of map for my game is somewhat unique. There is close to nothing that i can find (unless it has a special name that i haven't clocked onto yet) that details how to even this. So i humbly ask those of you that can understand the below information to please send me in the right direction.
Set the scene : The game is a space based RTS. Space physics don't really apply and there is hopefully going to be me and few friends playing at one time. Units in this 'universe' will and can be created, leading to large fleets of 'spaceship types'. The universe is grid based and 3d, you cannot see a grid unless you go into it or own something that is in it, a planet for instance. Each grid is essentially a solar system, one maybe two planets occupying it.
Now i hope that's built something up in your head, here's the pictures that is basically what i want to try and do..nothing revolutionary its been done before but there's no info on it : zoomed out in map overview and in its entirety - http://media.gamingexcellence.com/screenshots/time-of-defiance/1586.jpg
zoomed in showing occupants of that grid http://media.gamingexcellence.com/screenshots/time-of-defiance/1600.jpg
Inside those grids is 3d and graphical - http://megagames.com/sites/default/files/game-content-images/prvtmofdfnce_l14.jpg
All i am asking is someone to point me in the right direction, i'm not looking for code handouts and i'm not looking for a book i need to read, i learn ten times faster practically making my own mistakes but i just don't even know where to start with creating this seemingly dynamic grid based map.
Constructive help would be amazing please and i look forward to your responses.
I don't think taking game design in college is useful. Anyway, I'm not really sure what the question is...are you asking how to draw the grid? Or something else?
Its more how to approach making this huge map, do i simply put grid next to grid, empty them and then put prefabs etc in them scaled down so the whole thing seems huge? or is it a case of this being a floating flat layer that communicates with the scenes to display information giving the illusion it is grid based when only the skyview is? Im sort of hoping someone is going to look at it and go , ah thats called 'lalala' , then i can shoot off afer many thankyou's and start learning how to implement it heh
