png of 256KB turns into 6.4MB on build!
The png is 1500x1000, only to colors, and it is 256KB acording to windows explorer. But Unity says the texture weights 6.4mb ( max size 2048 ), 3.2 (max size 1024)... If I set the max size to 512 the quality loss is noticible and its disk size is still bigger than the png.
What is going on?

I was wrong.
When you check the unity editor log, in the "Build report" section, you can read the uncompressed texture sizes. So no matter what size it is in your project folder and no matter what file format you use the log is telling you how much that texture is going to be in gpu memory in a raw format. The textures can be compressed afterwards depending on the texture format you are using.
