Modifying an existing Unity file ore Import everything from scratch for a optimized VR immersion?

Hey,

I´m working on a Project at University, where I need to transfer an existing city from 3ds MAX to Unity for VR (HTC VIVE). The 3dsMax file was created from different files and different students, with the help of Maps and e.g CityEngine.

My Task is to optimize the performance, add vegetation and make it more realistic. The Max files has been Imported to Unity before.

Now my question is, should i use the existing unity file ( which is not perfect because of some faults) and just modify it in unity or should i start new by modifying the 3dsMax file and then Import every thing from scratch into Unity.

What would be better and faster? Has someone some helpful advises ? Also, i created a real world Terrain from a hightmap with Gaia is it possible to combine the Scene with another one for example with the transferred city?
