4 Viewports like in 3ds Max in Unity?
Is it possible - in the Unity IDE - to have several different "viewports" (like in 3ds max or blender) of the scene view?
This would help with placing objects in a scene.

Yes it is possible - Go to Window > Layouts > 4 Split and you will have 4 different viewports that can be controlled individually. Using the axis indicator you can get a side and top view, etc., for the different viewports
neat! slight prob - after changing layout, i find that i am not able to find my scene objects in sceneview...
Click on the object in your Heirarchy you wish to view in the Scene Window, then press the 'F' key, it will focus the Scene Window on your objects location :)
To make it be centered in a particular viewport, move the mouse over the viewport you want the object centered in before pressing 'F'
