GameObject and Asset - Terminology
Hi everybody,
I'm having trouble with distinguishing GameObjects and Assets and hope anybody can help me with my confusion... :)
As for my understanding, gameobjects make up a scene and it's the components (ie. materials) and the assets used with the components (ie. textures) that make a gameobject unique. Without combination a gameobject would be nothing more than data for position, orientation and scale. An asset would be nothing more than a 3D-mesh-, 2D-graphic-, audiodata stored on the harddrive. When I've created a gameobject with multiple components and assets and save it as a prefab it becomes a reusable asset itself.
Am i getting this all wrong or has anybody a better (clearer) explanation for the terminology of gameobjects and assets?
I'm looking forward to some input.
Best regards mat
Asset isn't a really a hard-edged technical term. It just means anything you can easily use and reuse to make stuff - so pictures, 3D models, sounds ... . In Unity, most things in the Project window are Assets (I call it the Asset window.) Since the only purpose of a prefab is to be reused in the Scene, it feels very asset-ty.
