Wheel collider problems

I know the basics of wheel colliders, but I am still relatively new to them. Whenever I try to use wheel colliders for some reason my car has problems. In my scene, (for personal uses), I took the unity standard assets car. It was perfect. I then took the same wheel collider values, and rigidbody values. I took a simple car mesh and moved the wheels slightly. I also made my own script which used similar aspects to the standard assets one. The wheels were accelerated when w was pressed, and the car would turn. That it did not handle well. It slid more. And for some reason it would shake uncontrollably and make it difficult to turn or move the car. I'm just wondering if the values I used were not good for the car size, or if I programmed something wrong, or if i'm just missing something entirely. If anyone has any experience or knowledge on what the problem could be that would be great.
