Question by LockHowl · Jan 07, 2016 at 11:09 AM · general

Looking to get started with Unity, few basic questions.

1) What language is unity most similar to? I have experience in C++ but that's about it. I am looking to practice making some small video game projects and hopefully will expand on that.

2) What is this splash screen for free users consist of? Is it like a couple seconds for when the game boots up or is it like a translucent image that is always present?

3) In your experience, would you say Unity is comfortable to use or does it take a while to fit in?

4) Any tips on tutorials to start with? I am looking to get into 2D RPG based games but would like to learn all the essentials. Where could you point me to?

Thanks for all your help Unity Community (that rhymes!)

1) Unity's main languages are C# and JavaScript, while you can also use Boo, but I would not reccomend.

JavaScript, while the same name, it's not the same for Web, being often called as "UnityScript", as only it's syntax that is very similar. If you have experience in C++, I would say to use C#, as it's syntax is very similar to C++. Also, there are inumerous C# tutorials, even for beginners or really advanced ones.

2) The splash screen is just a non-customizable Unity's logo being show at your game's startup (only at startup). Seriously, nothing to worry about.

3) Unity is very easy to learn, with some tutorials you can easily learn how to make you game base-code in a couple of week (when I started with Unity, it took less than 1 month to setup a functional FPS game with an simple enemy AI and animations). If you have experience with programming, if should be easy for you too.

4) http://unity3d.com/learn/tutorials is a good place to start off.

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLt_Y3Hw1v3QSFdh-evJbfkxCK_bjUD37n is also a good 2D tutorial. While being for a platform game, and a little outdated, it teaches things really usefull that can be used in almost any kind of game.

Read Unity Scripting API http://docs.unity3d.com/ScriptReference/

The Scripting API have some examples and very useful descriptions, so don't hesite to take a look when needed.

There is tutorials everywhere around the internet, a quick search will result in a dozen of useful ones. Also, Don't forget that Unity Answers is your friend, so don't be afraid and come back here anytime you want.

Also, welcome to the community!
