What is the best way to update a .fbx file?
I am currently working on a project with my friend, where I do the coding, and he does the modelling/animation. Whenever he adds an animation or update the model of the player he sends me the updated player.fbx file.
When I get this new file, what is the proper way to update it? I tried replacing the old player.fbx directly in windows explorer, but when doing this, the new animations don't appear. What I am currently doing is deleting the old player.fbx, adding the updated player.fbx, creating a new player gameobject, and copying the components from the old one over, and then deleting the old player. I am sure there is a more effective way than this.
Any help will be appreciated, thanks in advance.
I know this is a little old, but about a year later i'm having the same question. Did you ever figure this out?

In case anybody is wondering this same thing -- here is what I do:
Export updated FBX file from your modeling program as usual
Find your project folder for Unity. As of Unity Hub 2.1.0, this is listed on the hub under "Projects." This is where you created your project
In that project folder, find where the FBX file is that you want to update. It should be somewhere in the "Assets" folder (just like what you see in the "Project" view in Unity)
Move your updated FBX file to the folder where the old FBX file currently is. Confirm you want to replace it.
Everything should be updated. If you animations don't appear yet, go to your FBX file in Unity "Project" view, and go to the "Animation" tab. Uncheck "Import Animation" and then re-check it. Your animations may appear then. If not, go under the "Clips" section in the same area and click the minus sign to remove them. After that, re-check "Import Animation" and they should all appear.
This is correct! Years later I am waay more experienced with Unity and I'm pretty sure what I failed to realize is exactly how prefabs work. I would recommend having the model as a child of your gameObject in most cases, as that makes things work pretty flawless

Just replacing the file in Unity doesn't work?
Replace then right-click reimport? I've been doing too much 2D lately :)
Nope. Some animations stay the same in 2019.1
