How can I issue automatic updates to an app without the use of the play store/app store?

As I don't have the means necessary to put my app on the play store/app store I was wondering what my options would be for issuing updates for my app.

I want a dialog to appear on the app when a new update is available and when clicked, the new version will be downloaded, and then you can re-install the new version.

Can anyone point me in the right direction for this?
