best practices for importing and updating models

I recently had to import a 3d model from 3ds max into Unity. The first time I did it, it went pretty smoothly. I simply pulled it in, and then extracted the textures and materials. No big deal. The problem arose when I needed to modify some textures or materials, or add another component to the model. I figured Unity would have something in place to where if I pulled the new model in I would just extract the textures and materials again and it would update with the new stuff. This does not happen though. It makes multiples of everything, materials loose their texture refs, the model turns pink, all kinds of stuff, much of which I don't understand as I am still pretty new to this kind of thing. To make matters worse, we had a prefab made of this model, and that does not get updated with the updated model, and there does not seem to be any easy way to update it. This is a problem as we have approximately 100 editor references to the parts of the prefab. All of these will have to be reassigned if I have to bring in a new model/prefab instead of just updating the existing. Is there a good way of doing all of this? I work at a company making vehicle simulators and it seems nobody has ever figured out a streamlined process for this. I'm just curious if there is anybody on here who would know the best, easiest way of doing this overall process. Thank you!
