How can I animate a character using mecanim (animator component) and animate his material using animation component (legacy)?

Hello, I'm trying to have a character animated using mecanim with a humanoid or generic rig. And also, I want to animate his material on the mesh renderer to create an effect of glowing with the emission.

I have used this before but it was a long time ago, I found this answer: http://answers.unity3d.com/questions/512987/can-mecanim-legacy-animation-be-used-on-the-same-c.html

But I guess is something that has been deprecated in new releases as I can't control the movement animations of my character with mecanim and add an animation to the mesh. I used it before, in like 4.2, to have a character animate its face using a spritesheet. I premade the face animations and aplied them with an animation component and then used the animator component on the parent object to control the movement, now when a open that project with a newer version, everythin works fine but I can't edit the animations (.anim files) anymore.
