models and animation where to start?

Hi guys!

New to Unity and have a "played around" using the First Person Controller and importing som basic models (house, beds and so on). But i´m absolutelly new to character models and animations. All i know is that you can import models using DAZ or Poser? and then controll them and have them play animations that you made in DAZ and Poser. I have played around in Poser earlier but have never made animations.

I wan´t to play around and learn how to controll character models in Unity. Maybe i should start using a finished model with animations so i can learn the basics before i try to do something myself?

But i need someone to point me to the right direction. Some tips on videos or something i can read so i can understand character models and how they work and how you controll them in Unity. I´m not trying to learn everything there is to know about the subject. Just the basics so i can have some understanding and so i can work with them in Unity.

Can someone in this great community point me to the right direction?

Thanx in advance, also. I´m impressed about this community. Seems very active and people some very eager to help out newbees like me!

in order to animate characters in unity you will have to rig them in another program i have only used blender but their are some great tutorials by jhonny blender (look up on youtube) that will teach everything from animating to creating models. i would say most character animation is not done inside unity as its pretty basic, i have attempted animating a character from unity and it did not work out very well due to not having the abilities of using rigs in the same way.

however unity's next release will have a new animation system which should make all this possible, but check the tutorials even though they are for a different program most of what he says can probably be used in other applications

Isn´t blender pretty hard to work with? I have tested it and didn´t understand much.

Your best bet for character animations is to wait until unity's next released update which will allow more better options to use animation :D

If you are looking for a good character creation and animator for the time being then you should check out this free software called Blender!

Hope this Helped =D

But Daz and Poser seems much easier to work with for a newbee like me. Blender seems to be a pro tool. I´m not looking to be a modeler. Just want to have an animated charcter i can work with in Unity.

I dont know i think most companies will use maya, but i learned and will always use blender as its an amazing piece of kit for free considering the amount some companies charge. After you get used to the controls and where everything is its better, shortcuts will be ur best friend in though. I had no prevuous experiance modelling and found it easy to learn

At the moment you can do basic animation with Unity but you will be able to do more when the next unity is out.

But if you are looking for some ready made characters to start of with check out this link =D
