Question by eggwithnofear11 · Aug 12, 2013 at 12:02 AM · importblenderinvisiblewalls

Blender files Invisible walls

So im created this small office like structure with blender in which i am very new to and imported it over to unity,so now when i look at the walls from one side they just become invisible,i was able to fix some of it by flipping the normals whatever that is,but some of the walls inside cannot be fixed,so you can understand how aweful it looks when you can see everything outside the wall from inside the room? i messed around with the import settings, tried to import it as an fbx but nothing fixes this problem,i really dont understand why blender always has these problems,i imported hundreds of files from maya and never had to deal with this invisible walls! i could sit and flip normals after normals for days its not like i have anything else to do? am i right?

Are your walls just simple planes?

Pretty sure @Lovrenc is correct. $$anonymous$$ake sure you're using "cubes" as the object for your walls, ins$$anonymous$$d of 2D planes.

@eggwithnofear Blender is just as powerfull (and from experience has a faster workflow) than any of your 3ds $$anonymous$$ax, $$anonymous$$aya or what ever else. In any of them, when you create planes, they are one sided. If they weren't you'd always be rendering double the amount of trianges (very bad for performance). This is an optimisation that is used in any game engine and has nothing to do with the editor you are using.

If you plan on "dissing" a wonderfull piece of art because you do not know enough about it or Unity, please thin again before posting such a blatant lie :)

I never said that you were "dissing" Unity. I said you were "dissing" Blender. I may have my preferences, but the fact of the matter is, is that blender can and does compete with many of the (so called standard) 3d modelling software out there. Just take a look at all the recent games/short films that people have made using blender. You can't say that blender is "a shitty software in general", because you obviously haven't used it very much.

The thing is, blender might not have some of the really amazing features of some of the other 3d software, however, whether it comes to making movies, VFX, games or just 3d models, it get's the job done and half the time it get's it done faster than many other pieces of software. Blender has numerously been praised for a very intuative interface and a very fast workflow, even though it has a steep learning curve :)

When you create any object in blender, check your normals (draw them out). If normal comes out of the face, you will see it rendered in unity. If there is no normal, it will be transparent.

As @Benproductions1 said, it is done like this to enhance performance.
