Vertical Layout Group not Updating Child Positions?

Hi,

I've been trying to put the rectangles in the image below in a vertical layout group but it's not changing the positions of those children. Am tripping or something? I tried many combinations with the child alignment, and checking and unchecking various boxes but nothing happens. Is there a specific vertical layout group condition that I violating?

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks alt text
