VR Render Scale with MSAA?

Hi, this is kind of a two part question.

  1. Is changing VR render scale the same as SSAA?

  2. Should MSAA be used in conjunction with changing the VR render scale?

I'm trying to figure out if my VR game should have both Render Scale and MSAA settings to adjust. After a little research, some people say that increasing render scale is the same as SSAA and that stacking SSAA with MSAA is basically redundant and bad for performance, so only have one or the other. However, vive's The Lab adjusts both Render Scale and MSAA dynamically (adaptive quality), but I don't understand the point of MSAA if Render Scale (SSAA?) is already being adjusted.

I'd greatly appreciate any feedback on this as I have been struggling finding a solid answer for a while now.
