How do I get Input Fields to work with a controller?

I have a problem in getting Input Fields to take submit requests with a controller. Currently, I can get the submit button on a controller to work with any button or other UI object except with an Input Field. For some reason the Input Field only takes input from the return key. Is there a way to set up the Input Field to receive submit requests from a controller like an XboxOne controller? thank you for anyone who can answer this.
