Billboard Particles Orienting to User in VR

Hey all,

Just a quick question for anyone who has worked with particles in VR - I noticed that most of my billboard particles are orienting towards my user's VR view when in VR but it looks alright in the Editor.

Any suggestions on how to fix or address this issue or are volumetric particles the only way to go (i.e. we have to redo the particles from scratch)?

Thanks in advance!

Do you not want the particles face the VR view or it simply looks "off" in VR? For latter, you can change "billboard alignment" to "facing" in renderer module.

We want it t behave like a regular 3D object in the scene so that it doesn't keep facing me if I rotate around it, for example.

Then you change billboard alignment to "world".

Can you explain what you mean by "look alright in the Editor" ? Did you test both "eyes" in the editor?

A billboard sprite by definition will always be facing the Camera. In VR, the user and camera are effectively the same thing (though technically I guess there are two cameras, one for each eye?) Can you explain what you are seeing?

What version of Unity are you using? There was a bug before 5.4.

Yes and no. We didn't test both eyes on the computer (since we had to look through the device for that) as again, we assumed the definition that you mentioned that the user and camera are the same and hence, thought that when the single camera view in editor looks ok, it should be ok in VR - and of course, it's not.

I will attach some screenshots here later but basically, the particles are acting like those "front-facing" grass and keeps facing the camera/ user in VR, no matter where I am at in the scene. Let's say if I have a fire billboard particle, it would just keep facing the camera in VR, no matter where you go to, as if it has no dimension to it.

We were wondering of the best way to convert the look from the billboard particles to something more volumetric (or if there is a better route to fix the orientation effect of billboards).

Unity version is 5.6.1f1.
