Question by Felix · May 09, 2012 at 08:58 PM · cameralightshadowsflickering

Directional shadows flickering

My directional shadows are constantly flickering. My Scene-Setup:

  • A simple camera ( Near: 0.3 Far: 300 )

  • A directional light ( Soft Shadows with default settings )

  • A plane, capsule and box as shadow caster and receiver

  • Shadow Quality: Hard and Soft, Very High Resolution, CloseFit, No Cascades, 100

The shadows are flickering like they are changing the quality every x frames but the scene is extremly simple.

I tried a lot of things, need any suggestions.

As it turned out my Laptop used the intel-graphics instead of nvidia, and the graphics are really a crap so they caused the flickering.

Workaround: Try to use Deferred Lighting in Cam Rendering Path setup.

I have the same problem. The shadow distance just prevents the crap shadows being shown but it doesn't excuse the fact that the shadows are ugly. I'll try updating my video card drivers but my card isn't that old and there should be some sort of test in unity that asks for opinions about the results and shows varying light effects and describes what should be seen. This would allow the user to know if that effect is due to Unity having crap shadows or if it's the video card. I'm very happy with unity, it's the best thing in my life since I started computer programming however shadows fading in can at times look like some ugly monster has appeared when it's just a shadow that should have been there and no shadows due to a cull from the shadow distance defeats the purpose of shadows.

Nah, this could also be caused by occlusion culling, testing this now. I cleared the last bake and all my shadows were fine.
