Can I blend Lightmap opacity?
I want to achieve the same result as you get when using Dual Lightmaps in Beast, at that 50% point where it's fading between realtime and baked lighting. The goal is to get a mix of real shadows and the nice AO provided by Beast (SSAO doesn't cut it for my needs).
Should I do this through a shader, and if so, where's a good starting point? (Bearing in mind I've not had to touch shader coding to date).
This is in Unity 4 Pro.

You should open the lightmaps in an image editor such as photoshop and manually adjust the brightness of them.
No, that would only have the effect of darkening the lightmap, thus the entire scene.
